Showcase Review:
1953 Cadillac Series Sixty Special from Bruce Arnold Models
by Wayne E. Moyer

Bruce Arnold's second release, this fine "mid-sized" 1953 Cadillac is now available and has several small but noticeable detail improvements when compared to the first release. The Series Sixty Special was Cadillac's largest "owner driven" sedan, as the larger Series 75 models were really intended to be driven by a chauffeur. Cadillac was still very subtle in differentiating their series in the early 50's; although the Series Sixty Special had a four inch longer wheelbase than the Series (one was spelled, the other numbered), the bodies were very similar, with the "bigger" car distinguished by wider rocker panel moldings on the rear fenders and eight small vertical chrome "hashmarks" behind the vertical scoop. Fleetwood bodies had gold hood and trunk "Vees" and a small gold Fleetwood script on the rear deck.

BAM has modeled all these features precisely, along with virtually every other detail on the car. Even the trunk lock cylinder has been carefully painted silver! Much of the body trim, including the hood stripe, fender spears, rocker panel moldings, and all the window surrounds, has been cast in crisp relief and then carefully "plated" with chrome foil. Those gold "Vees" got the same treatment with tinted foil. The Cadillac badge, "Fleetwood" script, and the Series Sixty hashmarks are reproduced with decals that were applied before the final clear gloss coat, so they blend into the finish perfectly.

The bumpers, "sombrero" wheels, beautifully done "see-through" egg-crate grille, headlight bezels and eyebrows, taillight housings, the vertical scoop on the rear fenders, mirrors, antenna, and tint door handles are all chrome-plated metal castings, and everything has been attached to the body with top-quality craftsmanship. There's not a trace of any blemish other than the fingerprints I've left on the glossy surface!

Headlights have separate clear lenses while taillight lenses have been carefully painted with translucent red. Inside, the authentic upholstery pattern has two shades of gray on the seats, with blue, light gray and metallic silver on the door panels. The silver section matches up to the chrome central portion of the dashboard just as it should. The glare shield is the correct dark blue and although it's very difficult to see, it looks like the speedometer face has been painted. The steering wheel has been given lots of attention; segmented blue and gray rim, chrome horn ring, and translucent red center. Of course the inner handles and cranks are separate plated pieces.

All these details wouldn't amount to much if the basics were bad, but BAM's body casting is very clean and smooth with good crisp panel lines. The two-tone blue finish on this very limited-run model matches photos in the June 1999 "Collectible Automobile" very nicely, and is smooth and highly glossy as well. Other color variations will be available. Lines and proportions match the photos I've found very well, and all those details are right on the money. The same goes for major dimensions; this model is 1/43 scale. period.

All in all, this is an excellent example of a top-quality, hand-built, and fully detailed white-metal model. At a price of $269.00 it isn't cheap, but this much painstaking hand work never is-- and you get a lot of that with this model. Contact Bruce Arnold Models, 465 Ridge Rd. Novato, CA 94947 (Fax: 415/898-8213) for more information or the list of shops that stock this beauty.
